Gravity-driven acceleration of the cosmic expansion.

چکیده

It is shown here that a dynamical Planck mass can drive the scale factor of the universe to accelerate. The negative pressure which drives the cosmic acceleration is identified with the unusual kinetic energy density of the Planck field. No potential nor cosmological constant is required. This suggests a purely gravity driven, kinetic inflation. Although the possibility is not ruled out, the burst of acceleration is often too weak to address the initial condition problems of cosmology. To illustrate the kinetic acceleration, three different cosmologies are presented. One such example, that of a bouncing universe, demonstrates the additional feature of being nonsingular. The acceleration is also considered in the conformally related Einstein frame in which the Planck mass is constant. 98.80.Hw, 98.80.Cq,04.50.+h submitted May 18, 1994

The Phenomenology of Dvali–gabadadze–porrati Cosmologies

Cosmologists today are confronted with the perplexing reality that the universe is currently accelerating in its expansion. Nevertheless, the nature of the fuel that drives today’s cosmic acceleration is an open and tantalizing mystery. There exists the intriguing possibility that the acceleration is not the manifestation of yet another mysterious ingredient in the cosmic gas tank (dark energy)...

Generalized f ( R , φ , X ) Gravity and the Late - Time Cosmic Acceleration

High-precision observational data have confirmed with startling evidence that the Universe is currently undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion. This phase, one of the most important and challenging current problems in cosmology, represents a new imbalance in the governing gravitational equations. Historically, physics has addressed such imbalances by either identifying sources that were pr...

Acceleration from Modified Gravity: Lessons from Worked Examples

I examine how two specific examples of modified gravity explanations of cosmic acceleration help us understand some general problems confronting cosmological tests of gravity: how do we distinguish modified gravity from dark energy if they can be made formally equivalent? how do we parameterize deviations according to physical principles with sufficient generality, yet focus cosmological tests ...

Mapping the cosmological expansion

The ability to map the cosmological expansion has developed enormously, spurred by the turning point one decade ago of the discovery of cosmic acceleration. The standard model of cosmology has shifted from a matter dominated, standard gravity, decelerating expansion to the present search for the origin of acceleration in the cosmic expansion. We present a wide ranging review of the tools, chall...

Mimicking Λ with a spin - two ghost condensate

We propose a simple higher-derivative braneworld gravity model which contains a stable accelerating branch, in the absence of cosmological constant or potential, that can be used to describe the late time cosmic acceleration. This model has similar qualitative features to that of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati, such as the recovery of four-dimensional gravity at subhorizon scales, but unlike that case...
